Just then, the jaguar vaulted from the tree, with its massive paws spread out toward me. I had nowhere to run. Enclosing me on three sides were walls of rock. To my left, a steep granite cliff sliced through the dense forest down to the ferocious white water. I had to escape somehow. Sweat beaded on my forehead and dripped into my eyes. U.S. pharmacologist (one who studies drug interactions) Gertrude B. Elion received the Nobel prize for medicine in 1988 along with George H. Hitchings and Sir James W. Black. The three were awarded the prize for their development of drugs used to treat several major diseases.

Gertrude Belle Elion was born on Jan. 23, 1918, in New York City. She graduated from Hunter College in New York City with a degree in biochemistry in 1937. Unable to obtain a graduate research position because she was a woman, she took a series of jobs, including lab assistant, chemistry and physics teacher in New York City high schools, and research chemist. During this time she also took classes at New York University, where she earned a master's degree in 1941. Because she could not devote herself to full-time studies, Elion never received a doctorate.

In 1944 Elion joined the Burroughs Wellcome Laboratories (now part of GlaxoSmithKline (a company that makes prescription medicines)). There she was first the assistant and then the colleague of Hitchings, with whom she worked for the next four decades. Elion and Hitchings developed an array (variety) of new drugs that were effective against leukemia, autoimmune disorders, urinary-tract infections, gout, malaria, and viral herpes. Their success was due primarily to their innovative (characterized by new or unique) research methods. Rather than using the trial-and-error approach used by previous pharmacologists, Elion and Hitchings examined the difference between the biochemistry of normal human cells and that of cancer cells, bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens (disease-causing agents). They used this information to create drugs that could target a particular pathogen without harming the human host's normal cells. Their methods enabled them to eliminate much of the guesswork and wasted effort typical in previous drug research.

Although Elion officially retired in 1983, she helped oversee the development of azidothymidine (AZT), the first drug used in the treatment of AIDS. In 1991 she was awarded a National Medal of Science and was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. She died on Feb. 21, 1999, in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Part of the play's inspiration came from the killing of John Hossack, whom Glaspell reported on while working as a journalist again for Des Moines Daily News. On December 2, 1900, Margaret Hossack reported to the police that her husband John had been slain with an axe by an intruder who'd already broken into their house while she was sleeping next to him. After Hossack was found guilty, Glaspell left her job as a reporter to pursue fiction writing. Hossack's case is retried in April 1903. The irony in Trifles is that the men in the play, who are trying to solve a murder, are completely oblivious to the clues right in front of them.

What irony is there in Trifles? The irony in Susan Glaspell's play Trifles is that the men in the play, the county attorney, Mr. Hale, and Sheriff Peters, are focused on finding evidence of a murder, and yet they completely miss the evidence of the motive for why Mrs. Wright killed her husband. The women in the play, Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, however, recognize the evidence and understand Mrs. Wright's motive. The men are so focused on the physical evidence of a crime they overlook the emotional evidence that the women recognize. The irony is that the men, who are supposed to be the experts, are blind to the truth of the crime and the women, who are seen as unimportant, are the ones who understand what happened. This irony is furthered when Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters decide to keep the evidence of the motive to themselves, knowing that the men would not understand.Their silence serves to protect Mrs. Wright from the consequences of her actions while maintaining the men in their positions of power. The women in the play, who are not officially part of the investigation, are the ones who pick up on all the small details that give away the murderer.

Who is an Anorexic Person?

It is possible for anorexia, also known as anorexia nervosa, to be fatal. Starvation occurs when anorexic individuals ingest extremely small amounts of food. They may eventually lose all appetite and become dangerously undernourished, but they may still think of themselves as overweight. Frequently, anorexics must be hospitalised because of their extreme malnutrition. They continue to insist that they are healthy even in such situation.

Anorexia has two variations: The bulimia eating disorder, which is characterized by "bingeing and purging," in which a person willfully induces vomiting after eating, is connected to one type. The other subtype shows up when there is a stringent calorie and dietary restriction.
